Local History: The Armory

Located at 1301 Arapahoe St in Golden lies a landmark building with a storied past. Built in 1913, designer James H. Gow envisioned a home for the National Guard’s Company A reminiscent of a medieval castle. It is said he collected 3,300 wagonloads of stone from nearby Clear Creek and Golden Gate canyon which makes up the exterior of the building. It was, at one time, the largest cobblestone building in the United States.

For over 110 years, the building has housed many uses. The Armory’s original uses included Golden’s Post Office and photo shop on the first floor, along with barracks, mess hall, weapons storage, auditorium, and map room on the upper levels. Always adapting to the needs of the local community, during the influenza epidemic of 1918, the building became an emergency hospital utilized by the Red Cross.

The state owned building functioned as an armory from 1913-1971, until it was sold to a private owner. It’s rumored that actor Gene Hackman was one of its previous owners. The building has served as hotel, offices, industrial bank, and student housing for Colorado School of the Mines.

Today the Armory houses local favorite Cafe 13 (check it out if you haven’t), and Connect’s workspace, one of Golden’s best coworking spaces.

Sauna & Cold Plunge Event: Update

Thank you to everyone who chimed in last week about a Foothill Crew sauna & cold plunge event with Nomadic Fire Mobile Sauna. 23 adventurous crew members are up to take the plunge (dad joke 🤦 ), so the next step is working with the sauna experts to determine if that’s enough of a turn out to stoke the saunas. Stay tuned!

P.S. If anyone knows of, or better yet happens to own, a piece of property with foothill views and access to a creek for a cold dip after enjoying the sauna, reach out!
