Foothills Property: Greystone Estate

When a Colorado icon that is over 100 years old, and has played host to Hollywood icons, U.S. Presidents, and international dignitaries comes on the market, it’s going to turn some heads. And holly hell, does the Greystone Estate deliver. It’s like if Jay Gatsby relocated to the Colorado mountains. The original owner described building it with the “elegance and feel of a fine Adirondack mansion combined with a mountain rustic style.”

You get a 12,000 sf Manor House, as well as six additional residences and structures. When buildings have names like The Carriage House, you know you’re about to step into some opulence and history.

Greystone was designed for entertaining, built in 1915 by Denver socialite Genevieve Phipps and funded by her inheritance. The Phipps family had some cash 💵 to throw around. In the early 20th century, the Phipps’ were the second largest shareholder of Carnegie Steel Company. The family has a storied history in Colorado, with Genevieve’s daddy, Lawrence, a former Colorado senate member and the town namesake of Phippsburg, CO. Other Phipps family members owned the Denver Broncos from 1961 to 1981.

Greystone Estate’s heyday was arguably from the 1940s to 1980s. William Sandifer, another socialite and architect of the Empire State Building, purchased the property and operated it as a guest ranch. Sandifer’s wife, Sadie, was ultra wealthy and the cousin of Lady Bird Johnson, and loved to entertain poshly. During this time, President Lyndon Johnson, Frank Sinatra, and Groucho Marx roamed the grounds.

“For those who seek the finer things in life” (as the former guest ranch brochure stated), then here’s your next project. Allegedly, it’s been shopped around the market for the last 20 years, so if you need a few days to shake the couch cushions for the extra change, you might have a little time.

Pizza Review 🍕 

In an unassuming strip center off an unassuming road south of Golden, lies a hidden gem that most people have been passing by for years. Mannie & Bo’s is an old school joint- one with sports memorabilia lining the walls, red checkerboard tablecloths, and gigantic red cups for soda. It's the type of place where the waitress calls you “honey”, and locals walk in and are met with “the usual today, Bill?”

Their speciality is authentic Chicago style pizza, both deep dish and thin crust. In today’s world of fancy sourdough crusts, goat cheese and arugula on pies, Mannie & Bo’s is a throwback to simpler times. Maybe it’s because I’m a 90s baby, but there’s something refreshing about that every once in a while.

The pro move is the lunch special- $7.99 for a couple of slices and drink. I’m normally not a big sausage pizza guy, but on the recommendation of a Foothill Crew reader (shout out Carter 👊 ) I gave the signature sausage a try and it delivered.
