Colorado Icon: Making of Red Rocks

This Week in the Foothills

Iconic Venue

At the entrance to our beloved foothills, stands the greatest concert venue in the world: Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The natural rock features were formed million of years ago, in the same geological event that shaped Garden of the Gods and the Flatirons. How “they” claim to know this is beyond me, but we’ll go with it.

Originally called “Garden of the Angels”, the name was given by Marion Burts, the first recorded owner of the property in 1872. Over the next 50 years, the property cycled through a handful of owners. The City of Denver purchased it in 1927 for $54,133 ($991,284 in today’s dollars) and then went searching for support. Thanks to the New Deal (shoutout President Roosevelt) construction began in 1936 of the amphitheatre we know today. Materials and labor were provided by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA). Thanks a lot, fellas!

Five years of back breaking work ensued, even though the city representative assured the mayor this would a be a cheap and simple task (haha). Considerable dynamite was brought in, and 50,000 cubic feet of dirt and rock was removed to create the slope allowing all seats to have unobstructed views of the stage. Most of the muscle came from picks, shovels, wheelbarrows, and rock sleds of dollar-a-day CCC workers. We should tip our hats to these folks, and stop complaining about having to “return to the office” here in 2025.

Officially opening in 1941, Red Rocks has played host to some of the most famous bands and musicians spanning generations. Notable folks such as Johnny Cash, U2, John Denver, The Grateful Dead, Rush, and Widespread Panic have graced the stage, and the list goes on and on…

The earliest notable rock concert was the Beatles in 1964, which shockingly was the only concert they didn’t sell out during their US tour (impossible to believe 60 years later). Tickets were going for $6… C’mon people!

Ringo Starr later said “I remember it was very high and the air was thin. They were giving us hits of oxygen canisters.” Sure… Ringo, those were the only “hits” being passed around that evening 🙄.

Living in the moment with not a phone in sight

Be careful not to upset the Red Rocks Overlords though, because they hold some considerable power. In 1971, rock band Jethro Tull rolled into town and the show caused a ruckus. After thousands of wannabe concert goers couldn’t get tickets, fans left on the outside began charging and throwing rocks at the police line barricading them from the show. Mayhem ensued, tear gas was deployed, and the winds pushed the tear gas into the concert stands and onto stage. Talk about ruining it for everyone. Following the “Riot at Red Rocks”, the Denver mayor banned all rock concerts entirely, and that ban lasted for 5 years.

Police vs Jethro Tull fans stand off, 1971

Things have mellowed out since the hard charging rock and roll years, and shows are generally a fantastic time that go off without incident (excluding the hail boondoggle in 2023). It’s amazing we have such an iconic venue, right here in our backyard of the Foothills, that attracts the best musicians around the world. Let’s not take it for granted.

"It's an amazing location...One of the most stunning concert venues in the United States... or anywhere. I would hazard a guess that it's one of the most beautiful places in the world."
