Fort Logan 🇺🇸 

Located southwest of Denver along the route to the Foothills lies Fort Logan. Originally established in 1887 in response to Denver residents' safety concerns following an influx of new settlers, the fort's soldiers initially responded to local civil and labor disputes. Military action expanded quickly as troops were dispatched to the Dakotas to address conflicts with Native American tribes, to quell civil unrest in Denver during a gubernatorial siege of City Hall, and to maintain peace during labor union strikes.

Throughout the early 20th century, Fort Logan served various military purposes, including operating as a prisoner of war camp during World War II. After the war ended, the fort was no longer needed and was eventually sold in 1946. A portion of the land was designated for the Fort Logan National Cemetery, while the remainder was transferred to the state.

This Memorial Day, we remember the man for whom the fort was named: John Logan. The military installation was initially called "Fort Sheridan" after General Philip Sheridan, who selected the site. However, General Sheridan preferred to have his name associated with a fort outside Chicago and requested the Colorado camp be designated "Fort Logan" instead, honoring John Logan, who commanded Union forces during the Civil War.

Logan's most enduring legacy may be his establishment of Decoration Day—what we now call Memorial Day—to honor those who fell in the Civil War. While Memorial Day has become the unofficial start of summer and a day for barbecues for many Americans, its original intention was and remains to honor and mourn the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country.
