Beautiful Fish, Beautiful Places
This Week in the Foothills
For me, post 4th of July feels like we’re on the back nine of summer. You’re just starting to get in the groove, but know you only have a few more opportunities to take advantage. Hope everyone is making it count! -Tyler

FISHY FISHY FISHY

The red coloration in the lower jaw and throat is one of the attributes.
Before large scale mining operations began in the nineteenth century, the gorgeous greenback cutthroat trout could be found in nearly every picturesque mountain stream and lake around Colorado. As mining and human expansion ramped up, the demise of this majestic trout species looked imminent around Colorado. So much so that up until the late 1980s, biologists feared the fish was gone. Completely wiped out and fully extinct.
But lo and behold, the greenback trout was more resilient than once thought. Small pockets of native fish began to be discovered, including just up the road in Bear Creek. Sensing the urgency and near demise, Colorado wildlife personnel made it a major initiative to protect the species, and do everything possible to ensure its continued population growth. While still low in numbers relative to other trout species, thanks to the good conservation work, the greenback cutthroat is thriving and population counts are increasing. The Greenback Cutthroat Trout was designated the Colorado state fish in March of 1994.
These beautiful fish live in beautiful places fed by cold snowmelt and crystal clear waters. High mountain streams, creeks, and lakes make up their habitat. So if you’re going to find them, be prepared for an adventure into some of the most pristine country Colorado has to offer. If you do find large cutthroat trout willing to eat dry flies, ideally in a high mountain lake, my inbox is always open for tips!

The ol’ adage of “Trout don’t live in ugly places” certainly holds up
FOOTHILLS HOUSE

Like this view? Well here’s a sweet house overlooking Blackhawk and tons of the Front Range. Dislike nosey neighbors? Even better, as this one sits on 35 acres, bordered by 4,000 acres of protected wilderness areas. Play your music loud, enjoy coffee with a major view, or sun bathe in your birthday suit. Take it all in. The world is your oyster up here away from the crowds.
