This Week in the Foothills

OUTDOOR REPORT
LEAF SEASON
We’re on the doorstep of one of Colorado’s best shows: leaf season. Any day now, the hillsides and forests will trade their greens for brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds, a sure sign fall has arrived. Crisp mornings, golden afternoons, and cooler evening - what can be better.
Peak color doesn’t last long, but that’s part of the magic. Check out the fall foliage map (complete with peak color predictions)to help plan your adventures.
FISHING
If you’re heading out there this week, no need to rush out of the house at the crack of dawn. The best action has been between 9am and 1pm, thanks to consistent blue wing olive and trico hatches. With fall on the horizon, water temps are staying cool all day, so no need to rush.
When you’re on the river, remember the ol’ saying: foam is home. Fish are stacking up in foam lines, foam pools, and the shallow riffles, looking for a couple more big meals before the freeze sets in.
Fall is one of the most enjoyable times to fish. Cooler temps, less crowds, and more water to yourself to enjoy.
Recommended flies:
Blue-Wing Olive (BWO) Sparkle Dun, size 18–20 – A great match for the morning hatch.
Trico Spinner, size 20–22 – Fish this in the foam lines during late morning.
Pheasant Tail Nymph, size 18–20 – A reliable subsurface option if the fish aren’t looking up.
SNOW
Sounds crazy, I know, but ski season isn’t terribly far away. In fact, just last week some of the mountains got a nice little dusting of that white powdery stuff. A little teaser to remind you it won’t be long until we’re pulling the boots, skis, and boards out of the garage.
First up in the mountain opening queue: Wolf Creek is eyeing the end of October, followed by local favorite Arapahoe Basin the first week of November.
