SPOOKY SEASON

Tucked into the pines southwest of Evergreen, the Brook Forest Inn looks like the type of place you’d stop into for a cozy mountain weekend. Stone chimneys, creaky wood floors, and the fresh smell of pine outside every single paned window. But dig a little further, and you’ll hear the whisper of paranormal activities. Some of its guests never quite checked out…

The inn dates back to the early 1900s, and while quaint and charming on the exterior, the walls are swirling with strange, paranormal spirits. Stories weird enough to send shivers down the spine. At one point, the third floor was sealed off entirely from the public due to strange occurrences happening up there.

According to some, the ghost of a little boy who died of influenza romps through the hallway on the third floor. Another girl, who tragically was run over by a carriage at the inn, is said to run with him, showering the guests below with foot steps from a vacant floor.

The most common ghost story centers around Carl, the Inn stable hand. According to lore, Carl had a tough breakup with his chambermaid girlfriend, and he strangled her at the Inn and then offed himself. Guests staying in the same room where the tragedy happened have experienced sounds of loud breathing and the feelings of a presence above them in bed. Others have shared that a man’s ghost was blocking them from walking down the hall.

Carl has reportedly been seen in the cafeteria. When a hotel employee asked if he could help, the man responded “Don’t worry, I’m not here” and then vanished.

Whatever is happening, Brook Forest Inn has a spooky presence. Lights turning on after closing, radios switching stations by themselves, and heavy footsteps echoing from known empty rooms.
