The Lost Treasure

This Week in the Foothills

THE REYNOLDS GANG

Like a lot of good old western stories, this one’s about gold, greed, and violence..

The story goes back to the 1860s, when the Reynolds brothers rode into the Colorado Territory searching for trouble. Jim and John Reynolds, who had assembled a gang of confederate rebels, were on a mission. Their goal? Raise funds for the South by robbing stagecoaches and gold shipments moving between the mountain mining towns and Denver.

Operating out of South Park, they hit a string of successful robberies, reportedly making off with thousands of dollars worth of gold dust and coins. But after a botched raid near Fairplay and to evade capture (or death), the gang fled east over Kenosha Pass and down into the Foothills around present day Conifer.

While camped out along Elk Creek in 1864, the gang caught sight of a scouting party intent on extracting their revenge. Fearing capture, the Reynolds brothers carried the bulk of their treasure – over $60,000 – to an abandoned mine near the headwater of Elk Creek. A shootout at camp ensued, and the gang never made it back to retrieve their loot. Most were captured and shot, and the treasure disappeared into local lore.

For more than a century, treasure hunters, hikers, and curious locals have searched the canyons and drainages looking to strike it rich. A few have claimed to find traces – a rusted spur here, piece of old tack there – but the gold and coins itself has never been recovered.

If you do come across some outlaw treasure, we just ask you keep your favorite local newsletter in mind to share in the good fortune.
