GOLDEN TRADITION

What started as a simple idea has quickly become one of Golden’s most recognizable traditions.

Goldens in Golden was the brainchild of Joy Meadows, a local golden retriever owner who worked in PR for the city of Golden. The idea was to create an event that would attract visitors during the slower winter months while honoring National Golden Retriever Day. The tradition began in 2019 as a small meetup built around a slightly absurd idea: gathering a bunch of Goldens in the town that shares their name. A photo op of adorable golden retrievers under the iconic Golden welcome sign would be “PR Gold” in Joy Meadows’ words. The first year was grassroots. No big production and just a few hundred dogs.

Then social media did what it does.

Photos of hundreds of golden retrievers packed into downtown under the iconic “Welcome to Golden” sign spread like wildfire. Each year since, the event has grown, now drawing thousands of dogs and even more human companions. What started as a casual meetup has grown into what’s often called the largest single-breed dog gathering anywhere.

The city of Golden gets an influx of visitors, humans and dogs alike frolic, and local businesses feel the boost. At its core, the spirit of Goldens in Golden is simple. An excuse to gather, laugh, and enjoy a beautiful place with good dogs and good people.

Save the date. This year’s event is just a few weeks away, happening on Saturday, February 7th.
