Tight Lines and Green Beers

This Week in the Foothills

My apologies, I missed landing in your inbox last week due to some personal scheduling issues. But we’re back now, with a full edition in prep for St. Paddy’s Day and spring being on the doorstep. - Tyler

FISHING REPORT

Early spring on a Colorado trout stream is one of our favorite times. Most people are still thinking about ski season. That means the river is less crowded and more peaceful. The rivers are still in winter mode, but just barely.

Water temperatures in early March hover in the low 40s Fahrenheit, which has a major effect on the trout. Trout are cold-blooded — when the water is cold, their metabolism slows way down. They get lazy, and they don't need to eat as much.

So where are they? Slow, deep water. The long flat pools, the deep runs behind big boulders — anywhere the current slows and fish don't have to work hard to hold position. That's where they're parked.

The good news: as the sun gets higher and afternoons warm up, water temps can bump 4–6 degrees by early afternoon. That's when fish wake up and start feeding. The noon-to-3 window in March is often the best fishing of the day.

What Are They Eating?

The dominant food source right now is midges — tiny aquatic insects trout key in on all winter.

But here's what's exciting about March: it brings the first blue-winged olive hatches of the year. Blue-winged olives (BWOs) are small mayflies that hatch in cool, overcast conditions. Cloudy day, light drizzle, temps in the 40s? That's BWO weather. When they hatch, they float briefly on the surface before flying off — and trout will start rising to eat them. Seeing a trout sip a bug off the surface in March is a genuinely wonderful thing.

How to Fish to Them?

Early in the day, fish deep and slow. That means nymphing — using flies that sink below the surface and drift along the bottom where the bugs live. Drift a tiny midge or mayfly imitation through those slow, deep pools and watch your indicator (a small float on your line) for any twitch or pause that might mean a fish.

Later in the afternoon, watch for rising fish. If you see noses breaking the surface, switch to a dry fly — a tiny BWO or midge pattern fished on top. Cast upstream of a rising fish, let it drift naturally over their feeding lane, and hold your breath.

Most important: don't spook them. Cold-water trout in clear March streams are wary. Wear muted colors, move slowly, stay low, and keep your shadow off the water.

Tight lines out there!
