Calling all Dog Lovers: Golden’s in Golden

It’s a big weekend in Golden, with the annual Golden’s in Golden event taking place Saturday. This could be the largest gathering of golden retrievers and their humans in the world (someone fact check me on this). Events are happening all weekend, at various locations around town. More details in the Weekly Roundup below. Plan ahead on parking and transportation, as Golden will be a zoo.

Protect our trails

Colorado's wild weather swings - snow one day, 65° the next - create tough conditions for our trails. While we're all stoked about warm days, the resulting mud can seriously damage trails if we're not mindful.

Here's why it matters: When we use muddy trails, our footprints create depressions that harden when dry, making the trail uneven and prone to erosion. Over time, this forces trail widening as people avoid the ruts, which kills vegetation and can take years to recover. Using trails when they are muddy can really screw ‘em up, so a couple best practices:

1. If you hit mud early, turn back. It only gets worse ahead.

2. Stick to pavement when trails are soggy.

3. Hit the mud head-on. Those pricey Salomons are made for this.

4. Gear up right. Use waterproof footwear designed for these conditions.

5. Start early. Frozen overnight temps mean firmer trails for a few hours after sunrise.
