We seem to be in a festival season around town. Filmfest in Golden, Musicfest in Evergreen. Pumpkin and halloween events. Chili cook offs. Get out there and have some fun. -Tyler

STORIES WORTH TELLING

A few years back, a group of filmmakers and local storytellers packed into the Buffalo Rose for one night of short films about adventure and the people who chase it.

This weekend, that same idea takes over Golden for three days.

The Stories Worth Telling Festival returns October 16–18 for its fourth year, this time at the American Mountaineering Center in downtown Golden. It’s grown into a full weekend: 20 films, conversations with filmmakers, special guests and community events. It’s a homegrown production, founded right here in Golden. Come for the films, stay for the community and conversation that shows up around them.

This year’s films cover a lot of ground: women bronc riders stepping into a spotlight they were kept out of for nearly a century, nighttime ski cinematography set to the Grateful Dead (the one I’d be most excited about), a young man with cerebral palsy chasing powder and waves, and a prison recording studio in Africa where music becomes a lifeline. Mixed in between are a handful of films with Colorado roots, so don’t be surprised if you recognize a ridgeline or two.

Make a weekend of it. That’s the whole idea. Founder Gabe Rovick wants people to “discover a film they might never have seen otherwise, meet the people behind these stories and have conversations with the people sitting next to them.”

Catch a film, grab a bite downtown, come back for another.

ADIOS, ABEJAS

In unfortunate news, local favorite Abejas announced over the weekend it was closing its doors, after 11 years in Golden.

It’s always a bummer to lose local restaurants. The restaurant biz is a tough, ever-changing industry, and you never know how long your favorite restaurants will be around. Support the places you love while you can 🤝 .
