Festival Season
This Week in the Foothills

FESTIVAL SEASON
Buffalo Bill Days
Golden will again be the setting for its annual Buffalo Bill Day's celebration. Going on over 80 years, the event dates back to the original event of a trail ride up Lookout Mountain to Buffalo Bill’s grave, to celebrate his life and western legacy (which we talked about here last week). This year brings a full 3 day weekend of events, including arts and craft festival, events for the kiddos, live music, Best of the West Parade, and more. Gather up the herd, and join in on this awesome small town community event.
Evergreen Jazz Fest
Now going on its 21st rendition, the Evergreen Jazz Festival is ready for another outstanding event. Will it live up to its description as “the best jazz festival anywhere”? Guess you’ll have to be the judge of that.
3 days (July 25-27) of international, world class bands. Five unique stages. Big talent, small venues, and an awesome setting. What more could you ask for?
Elevation Celebration- Conifer
Held in beautiful Conifer, Elevation Celebration is an annual festival that celebrates the local community and incredible folks that call this place home. Taking place Saturday July 26 and Sunday July 27, the festival features plenty to do. Live music ✅, craft fair from local artists ✅, delicious food and drink ✅, children’s game to keep them from driving you crazy ✅.
Feeling a little guilty about all the delicious food you want to enjoy at the festival? Kick off your Saturday with a Run/Walk Event, then party to your hearts desire the rest of the weekend.
SAUNA
Up until about 5 years ago, the thought of willingly sitting in a hot box, sweating until you about pass out, and then jumping into freezing cold water immediately after would be met with some apprehension. Yet, today saunas and cold plunges (contrast therapy, as they say) is all the rage. Just listen to any podcast or morning routine guru on Instagram. But I’ve done it, and damn if I didn’t feel like a million bucks after a couple rounds in the sauna and cold plunge. Maybe it’s a placebo effect, maybe there’s some credible research about the benefits. That’s for you to find out.
To get one at home, you either need space, extra cash, or an accommodating spouse. Likely all three. So that’s why I was stoked to find out about a group of local entrepreneurs creating a permanent space in Golden off south Golden Road.
Hooga House is setting out to create an outdoor wellness space, complete with hand built saunas and high end cold plunges, and space to relax with friends old and new. It’s like the sauna at the rec center, except not dark and dingy, and not always shut down for repairs.
Construction is wrapping up this summer, and they should be open in the next couple of months. Follow along on their instagram for some pretty cool behind the scenes looks at the construction and progress.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
A surprising part of this newsletter has been how much I’ve enjoyed digging into local history - and how much you all seem to enjoy it too.
Together we’ve explored historic buildings for sale like The Greystone Estate, an Evergreen resort that rivaled the Broadmoor in it’s heyday, and a conspiracy theory high atop Lookout Mountain.
These stories are some of my favorite to write, but in order to keep the Tuesday editions short and easy to read, I’ve been cognizant of keeping these brief.
So here’s what I’m thinking:
I’m considering launching a separate 2x/month deep dive edition of Foothill Crew. Longer-form stories about the people, places, and wild tales from our own backyard - complete with photos and details that you’d maybe never know about.
It’d be a small paid subscription - just a few bucks a month - and would help support the time it takes to research and write these.
What do you think? Would this find it’s way into your reading rotation?
Vote in the poll below 👇️ and we’ll let you all decide!
Should we go deeper on local history? |
